Student Mobility
Four Countries. Four Partner Universities. Six Mobility Pathways.
SMARTLight brings together four partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and France, offering six predefined international study pathways within a two-year, 120 ECTS Master's programme.
International mobility is a compulsory part of the SMARTLight programme. Students will spend their first academic year at one partner university and their second academic year at another university in a different country.
Each pathway combines complementary academic expertise in photonics, optical and wireless communications, artificial intelligence, machine learning and technologies relevant to future 6G telecommunications systems.
On successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded two national Master's diplomas, one from each university attended, together with a Diploma Supplement.
How Student Mobility Works
The SMARTLight programme is organised into four semesters across two academic years. Each student follows one of six predefined mobility pathways, combining study periods at two partner universities.
Year 1 — Core Curriculum
Semesters 1 and 2 | First Partner University
Students begin their studies at the first university specified in their mobility pathway, completing the first-year curriculum and developing the academic and technical foundations required for their chosen specialisation.
SMARTLight Summer School
Between Year 1 and Year 2 | Compulsory
Between the two academic years, students are required to attend the SMARTLight Summer School.
This intensive, hands-on learning experience provides exposure to industry challenges and strengthens the knowledge developed during the first year. The planned programme includes an Industrial Workshop day and sessions on entrepreneurial strategies and research commercialisation.
Year 2 — Advanced Specialisation
Semesters 3 and 4 | Second Partner University
Students move to the second university specified in their mobility pathway, located in a different country.
During the second academic year, students undertake advanced specialisation courses that build on their first-year studies and draw on the academic expertise and research facilities of their second host institution.
Master's Thesis
Year 2 | 30 ECTS
The second academic year culminates in a mandatory Master's thesis worth 30 ECTS. Students will be encouraged to undertake research in collaboration with associated industrial partners. Depending on the chosen mobility pathway, academic interests and available opportunities, this may include short- or long-term internships.
Mobility Requirements
Physical mobility is an essential academic requirement of SMARTLight.
All students must complete at least two study periods in two different countries, hosted by the programme's partner universities.
Both study countries must be different from the student's country of residence at the time of enrolment.
Students must follow one of the six predefined mobility pathways, completing their first academic year at the entry university and their second academic year at the designated second university.
The available study destinations are:
-
United Kingdom — Aston University
-
Germany — Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU)
-
Italy — University of Brescia (UNIBS)
-
France — Université Marie et Louis Pasteur (UMLP)
Students do not study at all four universities. Their individual study journey follows the two universities specified in their approved mobility pathway.
Mobility Pathways
SMARTLight offers six predefined mobility pathways, allowing students to specialise in emerging 6G technologies while studying at two European partner universities. Each pathway combines complementary academic expertise and leads to a double Master's degree.

Academic Calendar and Mobility Transitions
The academic calendars of the four partner universities are closely aligned, with the academic year generally beginning in late September or early October.
According to the planned programme arrangements:
-
CAU, UNIBS and UMLP begin their first semester in September.
-
Aston University begins its first semester in October.
Differences between institutional academic calendars will be addressed through coordinated academic arrangements.
Where transitions create short scheduling gaps, independent study assignments may be used. Where academic schedules overlap, examination arrangements will be coordinated to support students' progression to their next host university.
Detailed academic calendars, examination periods and mobility timelines will be communicated through the relevant programme and university documentation.
Academic Recognition and Credit Transfer
Although students complete their studies at two different universities, their academic achievements form part of one integrated SMARTLight programme.
SMARTLight will use the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) as its common framework for academic credit recognition.
The programme comprises 120 ECTS in total, corresponding to 30 ECTS per semester.
Aston University operates under the UK credit system, with credits aligned to ECTS through the agreed conversion of two UK credits to one ECTS.
The partner universities will apply mutually agreed arrangements for recognising learning outcomes, credits and grades achieved during mobility, subject to applicable institutional and national regulations.
Individual learning agreements will define students' study pathways, while academic progress and credit accumulation will be monitored across the programme.
On successful completion, students will receive two national Master's diplomas, accompanied by a Diploma Supplement documenting their academic achievements and mobility pathway.
Student Support Throughout Your Mobility Journey
SMARTLight plans to provide coordinated academic and administrative support throughout the student journey, from admission and preparation for travel to studies at each partner university.
Support will be organised through a central programme helpdesk and relevant services at the host institutions.
