Degrees
SMARTLight is a two-year, 120 ECTS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's programme structured around six predefined mobility pathways.
Each pathway provides a distinct specialisation across photonics, 6G technologies and artificial intelligence/machine learning, while ensuring that students achieve shared programme learning outcomes.
Upon successful completion, students are awarded a double degree based on their study periods at two partner universities.
Aston University — United Kingdom
Master's Degree in Smart LightWave Technologies for 6G Telecom Systems
The degree equips students with interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills in photonics, data science, sensing and machine learning.
Through a combination of theoretical training, laboratory work and industry-relevant projects, students develop expertise in fibre-optic networks, 6G systems and AI-enhanced optical communications.
The programme prepares students to address complex engineering challenges across telecommunications, semiconductors and the wider digital economy.
Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel — Germany
Master's Degree in Electrical and Information Engineering
The degree provides core training in optical and wireless communications, supported by digital communications and numerical simulation.
Students study photonic components and wireless and optical system design, alongside advanced topics such as visible light communications and fibre-optic communication networks.
This combination of knowledge and skills supports the development of expertise in future communication systems.
University of Brescia — Italy
Master's Degree in Electronics Engineering
The degree combines foundational and advanced training in communication technologies with relevant knowledge of artificial intelligence, photonics and network security.
The first year establishes the theoretical foundation, complemented by specialised modules such as optical communication components and vehicular networks.
The second year strengthens practical and advanced technical skills through subjects such as digital modulation, microwave engineering and optimisation algorithms.
Graduates develop the analytical and technical capabilities required for smart and secure communication systems in industry, research and academia.
Université Marie et Louis Pasteur — France
Master's in Fundamental Physics and Applications: Engineering Physics & Advanced Photonics Technologies
Building on the internationally recognised research activities of the FEMTO-ST groups, the E-PhoT programme provides advanced knowledge and experimental skills in photonics, micro- and nanotechnologies, time-frequency metrology, information theory, and quantum information and technologies.
The programme also includes applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in photonics.
Teaching and supervision are delivered by experienced academic staff and full-time researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), providing a research-led learning environment.
Double Degree
SMARTLight is organised as a two-year programme comprising 120 ECTS credits and six predefined mobility pathways.
Students complete their first two semesters at one partner university and their third and fourth semesters at another partner university, following their selected pathway.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates receive two nationally recognised Master's degrees from the respective partner universities.
