Admission & Selection Criteria

SMARTLight welcomes applications from candidates with a relevant academic background and a strong interest in smart lightwave technologies, telecommunications and future 6G systems.

Admission and selection are based on transparent, merit-based procedures applied jointly by the four partner universities.

Admission Criteria

Applicants to the SMARTLight Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programme must meet the common admission requirements established by the consortium.

Applications are assessed on the basis of:

  • Academic qualifications: Applicants must hold a relevant Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification that meets the programme's degree-level requirements.

  • Relevant academic background: Applicants should demonstrate appropriate academic preparation in disciplines relevant to SMARTLight, including telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, photonics, computer science, physics or related fields.

  • English language proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate the English language proficiency required to undertake the programme.

  • Mobility pathway requirements: Applicants must satisfy any additional admission requirements applicable to their assigned mobility pathway and host universities.

Applicants Completing Their Bachelor's Degree

Students in the final year of their Bachelor's degree may apply for conditional admission, provided they successfully complete all degree requirements before the SMARTLight programme commences.

Applicants must provide the required academic documentation before their admission can be finalised.

Selection Criteria

All applications are assessed through a centralised selection process managed by the SMARTLight consortium.

Applications first undergo a completeness and eligibility check. Eligible applications are then evaluated by the SMARTLight Selection Committee, with representation from all four partner universities.

The selection process is based on academic merit, relevant experience, abilities and potential, in accordance with the programme's equal-opportunity and non-discrimination principles.

Selection Results and Mobility Pathways

Following the evaluation, the Selection Committee establishes a ranked list of applicants and a reserve list.

Admission offers are issued according to the selection results and available places. Where places become available, offers may be extended to eligible candidates on the reserve list.

Applicants may indicate their preferred mobility pathway. However, the final mobility pathway is determined by the Selection Committee, taking into account applicant ranking, academic suitability, the requirements of the starting university and applicable admission regulations.

Successful applicants receive a formal admission letter and information about the next steps towards enrolment.

Appeal Procedure

Applicants who are unsuccessful in the selection process have the right to appeal in accordance with the SMARTLight Study, Teaching and Examination Regulations.

Applicants will be informed of the relevant appeal procedure and applicable requirements when selection results are communicated.

Appeals are handled through the programme's established procedures to ensure transparency, fairness and appropriate consideration of applicants' concerns.
